I woke up this morning with really good intentions. I was going to jump out of bed and head to the gym in the hotel. As I rolled over to see where it was 7 or 8 o-clock I was shocked to see it was 10:15 otherwise known as t-45mins until checkout which isn’t enough time for the gym, shower and packing. There is nothing nicer than good intentions to hit the gym that are followed by a great excuse not to go. So we were in the car by 11am with a couple of hours drive ahead to Pittsburgh, unfortunately it turns out we left all of our good intentions in New Philadelphia.

Getting in the car in the morning is very exciting for Grant and I at the moment because we have a bit of a December treat going on. A few days ago after I had been going on about decorating the car for Christmas Grant left me in a supermarket with $30 and 30 mins. He’s just worked out that I’d only spent $10 on décor which is a pack of silver snowflakes that are taped over the windows (there is more tape on show than snowflake) and a set of completely impractical fairy lights that make it harder to see at night and so have stayed in the box. The exciting purchase was two miniature xmas stockings which are dangling from the gear stick and rear view mirror. When I couldn’t find any decent chocolate advent calendars and with $20 left in the budget I bought a bunch of Christmassy tasty treats and each morning the stockings have a little chocolate santa or snowman (or beef jerky because men are weird) waiting inside for us. The size of the snacks has been increasing slowly since 1Dec as we should really have predicted but fortunately the stockings can only fit so much in. All this means that despite my good intentions after being up for an hour today I had zero gym visits in the bag ad had eaten 2 mini kit kats.

The drive to Pittsburgh was pretty because of all of the frozen lakes and snow but nothing major to report. It took us a while to find a hotel and so by 3.30 we still hadn’t really achieved anything and were ready for some non car related activities. After a bit of research we found Frick Park in Pittsburgh. Frick Park is full of hiking trails, in an hour we only saw 4 people and about 10 dogs so we had fun wandering round before it got dark and Grants ears started to freeze. Having long hair is really starting to pay off now that its -3 degrees every day. We hardly scratched the surface on the park and so are going to head back tomorrow to see some more of it.

After the walk we had worked up a hunger and so headed for a Primanti brothers sandwich. We’d heard about these at thanksgiving as something created for truckers who couldn’t stop but needed a big meal to go. Grant had the Pittsburgh Cheese steak which is a hamburger patty and cheese sandwich with french fries and coleslaw stuffed in the middle. It’s the no 2 best seller (beer is no 1). Mine was the Pastrami cheese sandwich and since they all come with fries and slaw in the middle was equally big. With our stomachs suitable lined and then some we could head for a night out.

Pittsburgh is pretty big and there and so there are a bunch of different areas you could go to for a night out. We’d heard that Carson Street has 23 blocks filled with bars and restaurants and so was the natural choice for a snowy pub crawl. The whole street is really lively and the bars are all busy and pretty fun. My one complaint would be that the bars are all the same and so by our 4th and 5th bar I had a strong sense of de ja vu. Grant on the other hand felt that each one was pretty close to his ideal bar and so was happy as larry in all of them. The oddest bar was the one where people were allowed to smoke which looks strange when you haven’t seen it for a while especially as even the barman was smoking when we walked in. It was nice to be somewhere so lively and one of the funniest points of the night was when a balding, bearded man in glasses came over to say his friends think Grant was trying to impersonate him.

Tomorrow: More hikes, The Strip (which means more food) and The Andy Warhol museum.
