Day 118 was rubbish. After waking up at about 7am thanks to a passing freight train that wasn’t shy about using it’s super-sonic horn and, just in case that didn’t wake you, who’s motion shook the cardboard walls of our stickle-brick motel like a rag doll, the next five hours were spent doing clerical chores and four months of general maintenance. I am the kind of guy that used to suffer fairly severe post-holiday blues after a public holiday induced long weekend so having to think about real-world things like tax returns after 117 days of playing was a real slap in the chops.
As a reward, we turned a 1 hour journey from San Antonio to Austin into a 2 hour journey by detouring via Kreuz Market BBQ joint in Lockhart, the alleged BBQ capital of the world. The place is the size of a small warehouse with enough chopped wood sat in the parking lot to build a medium sized village and whilst the average BBQ joint has its signature smoker, this place had eight. It was frightening. The trouble is, I am afraid that the impossible might have happened…I think I am all BBQ’d out…well, for a couple of days at least. They sell the meat by the pound so we got a pound of beef brisket, a pound of beef shoulder, a house made original sausage, a jalapeno cheese sausage, a pint of beans and some German potatoes…and all this came with half a loaf of bread for no good reason. It was a staggering amount of food. Let’s be clear about this, I love brisket but this was really fatty and not even that tender. The beef shoulder was better despite being a little dry because of the drastically lower fat content and the sausages were undeniably great. Maybe the problem was being there at lunch as eating this amount of food at 1pm just made us feel rank? Or maybe it was a hangover from our morning at “work”? Whatever it was, it was pap.
Anyway, the rest of the day didn’t get any better as we’d got ourselves into a bit of a mood by this point and spent the rest of the night doing some research to tide us over the next few weeks. The net result is that staying in any of the ski areas in Colorado with a dog is going to be very, very expensive…so if anyone has any dog-friendly contacts then now is the time to step forward. On the plus side, it looks like we can trace a good deal of the journey there via Route 66 which is cool.
I’m babbling now so I’m outta here. Austin exploration tomorrow…lovely.
